Oliver’s heartbeat was humming in my ears again and he walked a step behind me when we entered the large greenhouse behind the Magical Arts building. I glanced behind me and gave him an encouraging smile.

He flashed me a brief smile in return but as his eyes darted all around the greenhouse, I knew he was anxious. Who wouldn’t be? I mean, even I was overwhelmed and awed at the amazing gardens that surrounded us. The greenhouse was a building made up of only windows that covered all four walls. Each window was bordered with white steel beams that supported plant boxes along every window base. Vines and branches covered in white Yarrow and dark Nightshade berries climbed the walls all the way to the ceiling, and Venus Flytraps and Shame plants creeped along the stone paths that traced throughout the greenhouse.

Oliver stopped to inspect one of the Nightshade flowers popping up in its usual evening bloom. He reached out to touch its velvet leaves pushing from the ground, then paused as the plant jerked away from his touch. “It’s like it’s…alive. I mean, I know it’s living, but, like it has a brain. It knows I want to touch it, and it doesn’t want me to.”

“Good. Nightshade flowers are deadly.”

Oliver quickly retracted his hand and put both of them into his pockets.

“Ah, welcome. Welcome.” Dr. Winter stood at a small planting table near the back of the greenhouse. He was elbow deep in soil but stopped whatever he was doing to acknowledge our presence.

Dr. Winter was an odd-looking Faerie. Most of their kind were stunningly beautiful. Tall. Muscular with angled features and luscious flowing hair. Not Dr. Winter. He was short and plump with a mop of silvering hair that was shaved short, barely brushing the tips of his elongated ears. His ears may have been the only telling sign of his Fae-dom, aside from his searing emerald eyes.

No, he didn’t look like your average Fae. And he was definitely the winner in his marriage. Mrs. Winter was the chorus director at the Academy and also taught Algebra. She was tall and lean, and she was a tree nymph, so her glittering skin had the most gorgeous forest green glow.

Oliver had stopped walking at the sight of the little man, so I took his hand in mine and led the way.

“You must be Mr. Chase.” Dr Winter wiped the soil from his palms onto his tweed jacket and outstretched it to Oliver. His emerald eyes were kind as he took in his new pupil.

“Yes, this is Oliver, Dr. Winter.” A sugary sweet voice pierced my ears from my left as Reema waltzed up to us wearing a tiny sundress. Her long brown legs shimmered like gold beneath the sunlight poking through the greenhouse glass. Did she not own any items of clothing that covered her perfect skin?

I suddenly hated my khaki pants.

Reema walked over to the other side of Oliver and placed a hand on his shoulder, and I tensed as he casually let go of my hand.
